If a manual toothbrush is used for the appropriate amount of time, and done with proper technique, it can perform just as well as a powered toothbrush. But many people don’t brush for the recommended two to three minutes. Children are also good candidates for powered brushes as their brushing habits tend to be less than optimal, especially when they are in braces.

dental x-rays | family dentistry | ellicott cityAt the office of Jennifer Sokolosky, DMD, our priority is patient safety and comfort alongside modern dental technology. During our dental exams and check-ups, we improve our ability to accurately identify and diagnose oral health issues through the use of digital x-rays.

Preventive dentistry is the practice of keeping your teeth and gums healthy so that major dental issues are caught right as they begin. Being able to clearly see your oral structure, including your bone, tissues, and joints, is critical in observing anything unusual.

Are Digital X-Rays Safe?

Digital x-rays are extremely safe, especially when compared to traditional x-rays, which expose you to 90% more radiation than digital x-rays; we always have your utmost safety in mind.

Not only do digital x-rays expose patients to less radiation, but the images can also be viewed within seconds, whereas film x-rays can take some time to develop. Since the images are digital, your dentist can zoom in, control the contrast, and share instantly with insurance providers and dental specialists. The best part is how environmentally friendly digital x-rays without the need for a darkroom and related chemicals.

What Can Digital X-Rays Help With?

  • Identifying tooth decay, especially between teeth or under a dental crown or filling
  • Bone recession related to gum disease
  • Abscesses or cavities
  • Issues with your root canal
  • Dental implant placement

When You'll Need X-Rays

For some patients, we recommend digital x-rays every six months. However, if you don’t have a history of oral health problems like gum disease, you may only need an x-ray exam every couple of years. New patients can always expect to have x-rays taken during their first dental visit to MD Smiles so that we can track any dental changes.

Dental implant diagramWhen a tooth is lost, a whole series of events can begin to occur. Chewing on the affected side becomes more difficult and over time the remaining teeth can actually tilt and erupt into the open space. Teeth like to touch so they will move in all directions.

Replace Missing Teeth!

Depending on the location of the missing tooth, we would most likely recommend either a dental implant, a bridge, or a partial denture.

teeth with sealantsThe pits and grooves of the teeth are prime areas for opportunistic decay. Even regular brushing sometimes misses some of these intricate structures on the chewing surfaces of your teeth.

Sealants are thin coatings applied to the biting surfaces of your child's permanent molars and sometimes premolars that help prevent bacteria and other debris from getting into the deep crevices on the teeth.

Who Gets Sealants?

Young children are great candidates for preventative measures like sealants because in many cases, decay has not set in. Children’s teeth tend to benefit more from sealants because these pits and groves tend to be deeper and less calcified then they are in adults.

Woman getting teeth cleaned at dentistIn a perfect world everyone would brush and floss twice a day. Plaque builds up over time and this sticky bacterial film can solidify and turn into calculus or tartar. This cement-like substance is removed by our hygienist at your regular cleaning visits. A six-month interval not only serves to keep your mouth healthy and clean, but it also allows potential problems to be found and diagnosed earlier.

Family Dentistry and Exams in Ellicott City, MD

In some instances a six-month schedule in not enough. Based on your dental history, rate of calculus buildup, and pattern of decay a 3 or 4-month interval may be needed. We can work with you to determine what will be best for you.

If you have any questions about regular cleanings or would like to schedule an appointment, please don't hesitate to call Dr. Jennifer Sokolosky, DMD today!
